We are in the process of animal testing to develop a cell treatment drug using mesenchymal stem cells for acute and chronic hepatic failure and metabolic disorders.

The liver is an important organ which plays a central metabolic role and various other roles, too. Hepatic failure is when liver cells acutely and chronically die or lose their functions due to various factors such as viruses or alcohol. The death rate is high, and treatments until now have included preservation method, hemodialysis and hemofiltration, but there is no method that innovatively recovers the function of the liver. The most effective method is liver transplant, but many clinical problems exist such as lack of donors, the problem of organ preservation and use of immunosuppressants. Liver cell transplant is a method to overcome these problems, but it too has the problem of not being able to amplify cells for a long period of time in test tubes or the human body. There is also the method of using a pig's liver to transplant liver cells. An unlimited number of cells can be used this way but there are problems of immunization rejection and virus, and use of other livers also have their limits. |

Medical recovery studies are actively being carried out all over the world to overcome various terminal illnesses such as spinal nerve disorder and heart disorders using stem cells, and efforts are being made to revive damaged livers using embryo or adult stem cells, too. Mesenchymal stem cells especially overcomes ethical problems unlike embryo stem cells, and can be derived from the bone marrow easier than adult stem cells, making it possible to derive a sufficient amount. There is also no chance of deriving a deformed form or of immunization rejection because the stem cells are derived from and transplanted into the patient himself. Actual research results show that when stem cells were inserted into the body they moved to the damaged area to replace damaged cells and secreted growth factors and cytokine to provoke recovery of the damaged area. Therefore the chance of developing hepatic failure treatment stem cell drugs that medically recover the damaged are is very high. |

FCB-Pharmicell is carrying out self-transplantation where mesenchymal stem cells that are capable of self-renewal and branching into functional liver cells are derived from hepatic failure patients, and transplanted back into the liver after division and amplification, to develop a medical renewal hepatic failure treatment stem cell drug of a new level that helps the liver recover and revives its functions to that of a normal liver. |

The development of a mesenchymal stem cell drug for hepatic failure patients can solve the problems of lack of liver donors and waiting for a donor, and problems of surgery. It will make a fundamental and effective treatment of acute and chronic hepatic failure patients possible, and contribute to a fast recovery of hepatic failure which can occur after various liver surgeries. It will also be used as a treatment method for various liver disorders due to metabolic disability. |

FCB-Pharmicell researched effects of mesenchymal stem cells as a treatment of hepatic failure with Ajou University Hospital and Yonsei Univerisity¡¯s Wonju Christian Hospital, and obtained positive results. We plan to secure more objective results from our trials by the end of 2007 and go through a process of conducting clinical trial for commercial purposes in the next 3 years, in time for bringing cell treatment drug, full product around 2010. We have applied for a brand name as shown below, for our liver treatment drug. |
